The Singing Sculpture, 1992 (video still), reconstructed first performance in 1969, video, 20 minutes, sound, color, courtesy Milestone films

Gilbert and George

In the performance The Singing Sculpture (1992), reconstruct a performance originally enacted in 1969, in the course of which they stood on a table in black woolen suits with their faces painted gold. Performing the same cyclical series of actions, they repeatedly sing a song popular in pre-WWII Britain. Their resemblance to sculptures, or identical objects of sorts, constitutes a form of ironic social commentary, and an externalization of eccentric behavior by theatrical means.

Gilbert Proesch was born in Italy, 1943; George Passmore was born in England, 1942; they live and work in England
