Semiotics of the Kitchen, 1975 (video still), video, 6 minutes, sound, b/w, courtesy Electronic Arts Intermix [EAI], New York

Martha Rosler

In her work Semiotics of the Kitchen (1975), Martha Rosler created a sphere of actions and images related to kitchen utensils, while demonstrating their uses in alphabetical order. In this work, Rosler produced an ironic and sarcastic paraphrase on the structure of a didactic television program, in order to criticize the ways in which women are identified with the kitchen.

Born in New York, 1943; lives and works in New York
